Fundraising, hiding behind the Boys and Girls Clubs

I just got a disgusted phone call from a friend in Wichita. She is coming to Kansas City for a visit on Friday because she just can’t abide the thought of breathing the same air as the Resident, who is shafting the taxpayers for a trip to Wichita to raise funds for the as-yet-unchallenged two-term class II senator Pat Roberts.

Here is how it works – he flies to Wichita for a pop-in at the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas. This visit is “official” so we foot the bill. I say pop-in because that’s about all he’ll have time for. He is scheduled to appear at this official function at 12:25.

But the real purpose of this little juggernaut is a fundraiser for Roberts at a private home. He will be there at 1:45.

Is there anything we can do about this sort of thing? Can the congress enact some rule that specifies that at least 2/3 of the time is spent on official business? I'm asking a serious question here. Lawyers, what say you?
