Where We Are Now

So where does the United States of America stand right now? Lets bullet point just a few little concerns that have popped up over the last few years:

* Unilaterally started an immoral and illegal war through lies and deception. Thousands dead here; hundreds of thousands there.

* Have rampantly desecrated and violated the Constitution in the most critical areas, including denial of Habeas Corpus.

* Our highest elected officials have outed and destroyed covert intelligence assets and front companies in WMD proliferation.

* The nation's justice department has been turned into a laughable partisan theocratic tool of a rogue political group.

* Bribery, corruption and pandering is rampant all the way up to, and through, the White House.

* Imperious executive officers brazenly act and claim to be above the law and refuse Constitutional oversight.

These are just a few of the highlights. There are hundreds; here is a good list. Actually, it is not a good list, it is a great list. Hugh is a regular commenter at FireDogLake and the list is comprehensive and a labor of love; please check it out.

So, back to the question, where are we now? Well, we are in a world of hurt. What we need is an Independent Counsel like Ken (Porn)Starr against Clinton or a Special Counsel like Pat Fitzgerald on the Plame matter. But, that is the problem. There is no availability of an "Independent Counsel" anymore; that law either lapsed or was repealed. Lapsed I think; either way it is gone. A Special Prosecutor has to be appointed, and at least to some extent, be under the auspices of the Department of Justice; the extent of control being the key question behind the recent Libby sentencing kerfuffle. If an investigation is tied at the hip to the Administration, there can be no confidence in the propriety of the findings; unless it is Pat Fitzgerald himself, and there is zero chance the Administration will make that mistake again. This is why you keep seeing some informed commenters, like Kagro X of Kos and The Next Hurrah, as well as our own Corpus Juris, scream for impeachment, with me chiming in every time I see it. Initiating impeachment proceedings would allow the appointment of impeachment managers and an investigative team with very broad powers. Gonzales/DOJ is the perfect vehicle for this since the Democratic leadership is too timid to go after Cheney/Bush. You informed readers of this incredible blog probably knew all this, but for those who didn't, that is basically the deal. Trying to corner the Administration into appointing a Special Counsel is too time consuming and messy; we need to get on with it. IMPEACH. GONZALES. NOW.
