Edwards' encounter with James Lowe

While Obama and Clinton are fighting for the attention of the Washington foreign policy wonk and MSM vote, John Edwards has been quietly marching to the beat of a different drummer. In appearance after appearance Edwards has been asserting that he is the champion of the common man against "them." I suspect Edwards' advisers have told him to be himself this campaign. Edwards has spent a lifetime as a trial lawyer. Being the champion of the common man against the rich and powerful comes naturally to any successful trial lawyer. It is who he is, and how he views himself.

The following video is of Edwards' July 18, 2007, encounter with James Lowe, the man whose cleft palate wasn't treated until he was 50.

Christy Hardin Smith of Firdoglake says

The fact that this man only got this life-altering operation when a benefactor stepped in to help him after living fifty years without being able to speak breaks my heart…and it should be an object lesson in how our current system is geared.
If that's how the story affects a sophisticated blogger like Christy just think how it plays throughout great swaths of middle America, the America where there really is a feeling that "they" are the enemy. Don't count Edwards out just yet. If he can find a way to get his message past the gatekeepers of the old media, Edwards might surprise the policy wonk crowd. Oh, that's right Edwards has Joe Trippe in his corner. Very interesting indeed.
