Al Qaeda's Coming! Al Qaeda's Coming!

Quick! Run! Hide! Be afraid! Al Qaeda's coming
and only the Decider can protect you!!!!!

Enough, already. This harkens back to the days of terror alerts. When Bush's ratings would begin to drift downward, a new and not-so-real threat of terrorist activity would be sure to follow.

Apparently, Bush's Brain is sticking with what he knows. Almost every major news outlet has caught on to the fact that Bush has upticked his use of Al Qaeda in his speeches. We now have Al Qaeda, the major group of insurgents in Iraq, Chertoff's "gut" and, today, the notion that Al Qaeda is the greatest threat to sweep across our borders.

"Although we have discovered only a handful of individuals in the United States with ties to al Qaeda senior leadership since 9/11, we judge that al Qaeda will intensify its efforts to put operatives here," states an NIE summary.

"As a result, we judge that the United States currently is in a heightened threat environment," the summary says.

All this, in an attempt to raise Bush's popularity. Rasmussen seems to think it's working. Bush has bounced up to 39%. Even Newsweek has Bush bouncing up 3% to 29%.

You would think we would have learned. And it looks like Most American People have. It's just the Republicans who are still stupid.
The bounce can be traced to the response of Republicans. Eighty percent (80%) of Republicans across the nation now give the President their approval.

Americans Are Not Stupid

In his review of the Bush love fest with reporters news conference , Andrew Sullivan makes a good observation:

The rank condescension toward the American people is also staggering. Look, Mr President, most Americans aren't as dim as you seem to be. Maybe it's time you realized that.
Today, Rasmussen released a poll that seems to indicate just how smart we Americans are. The results are interesting but more on why in a bit.

On the US Attorney investigation (my emphasis):

43% of Americans believe Congress is legitimately trying to find information about the firing of U.S. attorneys. Thirty-two percent (32%) believe the legislators are just trying to harass the Administration.
On Executive Privilege:

When invoking Executive Privilege, just 30% believe the White House is truly interested in trying to protect the confidential nature of advice given the President. Forty-five percent (45%) believe the Bush Administration is trying to prevent Congress from learning information.
On off-the-record interviews:

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Americans believe that is an acceptable compromise while 48% disagree.
On Congressional investigations:

Thirty-nine percent (39%) of Americans say that there have not been enough Congressional investigations of the White House since Democrats took control. Nearly as many, 32%, say there have been too many investigations while 19% say the balance has been about right.
Just to point out the obvious - 58% of Americans believe Congress is doing the right thing with its current investigations.

And, yesterday, on the surge:

Just 19% of American voters believe that the U.S. troop surge in Iraq was a success. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 43% of voters consider the surge a failure. Twenty-four percent (24%) say it’s too soon to tell while 15% are not sure.
The numbers are compelling. Even with the stupid Americans Republicans that continue to stand by their guy in large but dwindling numbers, it's clear that the a light has dawned. The Frat Boy has been exposed.

But that brings me back to the question I've had for some time. Is the President really struggling with Republicans?
The President continues to struggle with his own party. Just 66% of Republican voters approve of his performance in office.

Sixty-six percent! That's almost two-thirds. That number rarely varies unless Immigration Reform is on topic.

This begs my next question. Who are these idiots? Why do they not believe what they see with their own eyes?

I'm sorry. I guess I was wrong. I should have said most Americans are not stupid.

Obama and Clinton Neck and Neck.

April 23, 2007.

I really don't like horse race stories, especially this far out, but according to Reuters a recent Rasmussen poll has Hillary and Barack both pulling 32% of the likely primary voters. John Edwards is a strong third with 17%. Bill Richardson has about 3% and the rest are also rans. The margin of error is 4%. The poll was conducted between April 16 and 19.

Come on Seabiscuit.
