Is Alberto Gonzo?

Looks probable…

McClatchy is reporting that names of replacements for the beleaguered Attorney General were being circulated on Monday. Late Monday, congressional investigators took delivery of hundreds more Justice Department documents. Those internal documents are not expected to help Mr. Gonzalez keep his job.

Chitra Ragavan of US News & World Report reports that paralysis has set in at the Justice Department. One senior official is quoted as saying

Who could Bush find that could get Senate confirmation, since Democrats now run the show? It would have to be a seasoned insider, a consummate veteran or an elder statesman who has bipartisan respect and acceptance and a squeaky-clean record.

"The trouble," says one former official "is that no one comes to mind."

Hmmm. Maybe they should ask someone from Missouri, where nine-out-of-ten voters, whether they be Democrats or Republicans, would automatically say in a full-throated voice “What about Jack Danforth?”

Indeed. He served as Missouri’s Attorney General (which was John Ashcroft’s qualifying experience). He served in the U.S. Senate and sat on the Judiciary Committee while there. And although he is retired, he is a man of principle and duty, and he would step up if asked because his country needed him.

Danforth might be a Republican, but he is no partisan hack.

So...What about Danforth?
