Joe Must Go

The arguments, notwithstanding Bayh, for Joe Lieberman to be booted from the Democratic committee leadership staff are significant.

Aside from Lieberman's traitorous performance in his support of John McCain, Steve Benen points to his total lack of holding Bush accountable for domestic issues, not the least of which was FEMA's response to hurrican Katrina.

Joe says that we should let bygones be just that. I have one more reason to disagree.

A race now separated by 230-something votes BEFORE the recount that could have put a WIN in the Democratic caucus in the Senate. It's very important to remember that, not only did Lieberman campaign for John McCain and against Obama, he BACKED the Republican Senate candidate in a should-have Democratic swing state.

Yes, he might have been principled in supporting McCain over Obama - although he was ridiculously over the edge with his "Marxism" and not putting country first. But, there is no doubt that his backing of Coleman puts him squarely in the Republican camp. He didn't just campaign for McCain, he sought to overthrow efforts to get a cloture majority in the Senate.

Let me say that one more time: Lieberman sought to overthrow efforts to get a cloture majority in the Senate!

In fact, his actions in that race alone, without looking at his inaction as Chairman of the Senate committee overseeing homeland security, beg for his expulsion from the Democratic caucus.

While the Senate elite (yes, I dare to use the word) seek to coddle Lieberman because he was faithful to his belief that McCain best represented his world view on Iraq, the War and the Middle East, the truth is much uglier.

Lieberman covered the Bush administration's ass on their response to Katrina.

Worse, he deliberately sought to keep the Democrats from a cloture majority.

I'm not buying the all-make-nice argument. You don't put a fox in charge of the hen house.

Campaign Video of the Day -- February 16, 2008

Today's campaign video is the second John McCain parody video inspired by Will.I.Am's pro-Barack Obama vid Yes, We Can. The first, John.he.is has had over a million hits and was featured on this site. This video, No,You Can't, is from barelypolitical, and has had about 130,000 views. Frankly, I have no idea why anybody under 60 would vote for John McCain. McCain, like many old warriors, is essentially dark, pessimistic and retrospective. When he looks forward he sees all the way around the circle of life to his coming death. John McCain looks at America the same way he looks at his own life. He is just trying to fight off America's end as long as possible. The only way he knows how to fight is to kill. For him there will always be other wars.

It is easy to juxtapose Obama's message of hope with McCain's underlying despair. That makes McCain a ready target for parody makers. Young people (and many old people) are not willing to look all around the circle of life to America's decline. They still see America's hope and promise of a better future. McCain's 2008 presidential run may be known in the future as the Republican Gotterdammerung campaign. For over 200 years America has been a young country filled with the dreams of youth. I think it still is. If you do, you will vote Democratic this fall.

Blogosphere has people as bad as MSM on New Hampshire

Andrew Sullivan claims a “blacklash” from secret ballots, compared to Iowa’s open caucuses, sunk Obama. Arovasis at AmericaBlog entertains that as a possibility.

Neither that nor “crocodile tears” may be the answer.

Maybe, even if the choking up was somewhat calculated, she still revealed enough emotional realism to appeal to voters? Maybe Gloria Steinem was right. (Even though I think she engaged in a fair share of hyperbole, and that, not being a black woman, she can’t speak to both gender and race from personal experience.)

Maybe, as some bloggers are speculating, a lot of Democrats wanted to stick it to bloviators like Chris Matthews. Maybe more independents than expected voted Republican.

Maybe it was some combination of the four factors I listed.

That said, nothing Sully says surprises me. I’m not at all a Clinton fan, but he does have a grade-A case of Clinton Derangement Syndrome.

Aravosis? He should know better. If he doesn’t, he just went down a mark in my book.

Al Gore's Friends Quietly Prepare for Run

He hasn't lost a lot of weight. He says he is focusing on global climate change. He says he hasn't thrown his hat in the ring. Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards have raised record amounts and the race is in full swing. Despite all that, Al Gore's Friends are secretly assembling a campaign organization. There are several draft Gore websites. Here are a few: draftgore.com, algore.org,thePetitionSite.com,electGore2008.com,the Petitiononline.com. Is a movement building? Only time will tell. It is going to be a very interesting summer.
